About Santoshi Mata
Santoshi Mata, also called Santoshi Maa, is a Hindu goddess venerated as the mother of contentment. Her name comes from the Sanskrit word santosh, which means contentment or satisfaction, and devotees believe that she brings peace of mind, harmony in the family and the quiet happiness of being satisfied with what one has. She is worshipped above all through the Santoshi Mata Vrat, a simple Friday fast kept in countless homes, especially across North and Central India.
This page explains who Santoshi Mata is in popular belief, the story of her birth, how she is pictured, why Friday is her day and how her worship spread so widely in the twentieth century.
The story of her birth
The best known account of Santoshi Mata's origin comes from the popular devotional tradition of her vrat. It is not found in the older Puranas, but it is told lovingly in homes and in the vrat booklets.
According to this story, Lord Ganesha's two sons, Shubh and Labh, watched on the day of Raksha Bandhan as their aunt tied a rakhi on their father's wrist. The boys felt sad that they had no sister of their own to tie a rakhi on them, and they asked their father for one. Moved by their wish, Ganesha's consorts Riddhi and Siddhi gave forth a divine flame (jyoti). From this flame a goddess appeared, and because she had fulfilled the boys' longing and brought contentment to all, she was named Santoshi, the one who gives satisfaction.
So in popular belief Santoshi Mata is the daughter of Lord Ganesha and of Riddhi and Siddhi, the granddaughter of Shiva and Parvati, and the sister of Shubh and Labh. Since Riddhi and Siddhi stand for prosperity and spiritual accomplishment, and Shubh and Labh for auspiciousness and gain, devotees see her as part of a family that brings well-being to the home.
How Santoshi Mata is pictured
Pictures and idols of Santoshi Mata differ from one print or temple to another, but most share these features:
- Seated on a lotus: she is usually shown seated on a lotus, calm and gently smiling, much like the classical image of Lakshmi.
- Four arms: she commonly has four hands. One holds a sword and another a trident (trishul), weapons that she shares with Goddess Durga and which are read as protection against evil.
- A bowl of rice: a third hand holds a bowl or plate of rice, and some pictures show a golden pot instead. This is understood as a sign of nourishment and plenty.
- Blessing gesture: the fourth hand is raised in the gesture of blessing and protection (abhaya or varada mudra).
- Red and orange: she is usually dressed in red or orange garments with ornaments and a crown.
- The tiger: in some images she is seated on a tiger, another link with the warrior goddess Durga.
The calm face and the bowl of food speak of a gentle, motherly goddess, while the sword and trident remind devotees that she also protects those who keep faith with her.
Why Friday is her day
Santoshi Mata is worshipped on Fridays. In Hindu astrology Friday (Shukravar) is the day of Shukra, the planet Venus, which is linked with comfort, beauty, family happiness and married life, and Friday is a day widely given to the worship of goddesses. The Vaibhav Lakshmi vrat, for example, is also kept on Fridays (see vaibhavlakshmi.com).
The Santoshi Mata vrat is traditionally kept for 16 consecutive Fridays (solah shukravar), begun on a Friday of Shukla Paksha. The devotee worships the goddess with a kalash, offers gud and chana, listens to the vrat katha and sings the aarti. The most important rule of the day is that nothing sour (khatta) is eaten or given to anyone. The full steps are on the vrat vidhi page.
How her worship spread
Santoshi Mata is a goddess of the modern devotional tradition. Her worship grew in North India during the twentieth century, mainly among women, and it spread in a very personal way: through small, inexpensive vrat katha pamphlets, through devotional posters, and through women who kept the vow and taught it to their neighbours, relatives and friends.
Part of her appeal is the simplicity of her worship. The offering is gud (jaggery) and roasted chana, which almost any household can afford, and the vrat needs no priest. The katha, in which a suffering young wife finds relief through her faith, spoke directly to the lives of many women.
Her popularity grew enormously after the 1975 Hindi film Jai Santoshi Maa, which told the story of the goddess and of a devoted wife who keeps the sixteen-Friday fast. The film became one of the great successes of its year, and pictures and shrines of Santoshi Mata became a familiar part of temples and homes across India.
The meaning of contentment
The name Santoshi gives the heart of her worship. Contentment (santosh) is praised in many Hindu teachings as a virtue: being at peace with what one has, free of greed and jealousy. In the vrat katha the jealous sisters-in-law cause trouble, while the patient and faithful wife is blessed. Many devotees therefore understand the vrat not only as a prayer for wishes to be fulfilled, but as a practice of patience, self-control and goodwill towards others.
