"Jai Santoshi Mata, Maiya Jai Santoshi Mata" is the traditional aarti of Santoshi Mata, the goddess of contentment. It is sung at the close of the Friday Santoshi Mata Vrat, right after the vrat katha has been read or heard, and before the gud-chana prasad is shared. Many devotees also sing it at evening lamp-lighting on any Friday.

Meaning of the aarti, stanza by stanza

Victory to you, Santoshi Mata, victory to you, Mother. To those who serve you, you are the giver of happiness and well-being. This opening couplet is also the refrain: the whole gathering returns to it after every stanza.

Sundar cheer sunahri

Mother, you are dressed in a beautiful golden garment. Diamonds and emeralds sparkle on you, and your form is lovingly adorned.

Geru laal chhata chhavi

Your image glows with a deep red, ochre radiance and your face is as lovely as a lotus. Smiling gently, full of compassion, you charm the hearts of all three worlds.

Swarn singhasan baithi

You sit on a golden throne while graceful chamar fans are waved before you. Incense, lamps, honey and dry fruits are offered, and special dishes are set out for you as bhog.

Gud aru chana param priya

Jaggery and gram are dearest to you, and with this humble offering you are content. That is why you are called Santoshi, and you bless your devotees with abundance. This stanza explains the name of the goddess and the simple gud-chana offering of the vrat.

Shukravar priya maanat

You hold Friday dear, and today is that very day. The gathering of devotees has filled the place, and listening to your katha my heart is enchanted.

Mandir jagmag jyoti

Lamps shine brightly in the shrine and auspicious sounds fill the air. We, your children, bow our heads at your feet and pray to you.

Bhakti bhaavmay pooja

Please accept this worship, offered with love and devotion. Grant us the fruit of the wish that lives in our hearts.

Dukhi daridri rogi

The sorrowful, the poor and the sick have been freed from their troubles by you. You have filled homes with grain and plenty and given happiness and good fortune. The line praises the goddess in the language of devotion; it is not a promise of any particular result.

Dhyan dharyo jis jan ne

Whoever meditated on you received the fruit their heart longed for. By doing the puja and hearing the katha, joy came into their home.

Sharan gahe ki lajja

O Jagdamba, Mother of the world, protect the honour of the one who has taken refuge in you. You alone remove every trouble, compassionate Mother Amba.

Santoshi Mata ki aarti

Whoever sings this aarti of Santoshi Mata, says the last stanza, receives riddhi and siddhi (prosperity and accomplishment), happiness and well-being in full measure. Like the closing lines of most aartis, this is the traditional blessing of the hymn, held as a matter of faith.

How to do the Santoshi Mata aarti

The aarti is the last act of worship in the Friday puja described on the vrat vidhi page. A simple way to perform it at home:

Finish the katha first. Keep the picture or idol of the goddess on the chowki, with the kalash and the bowl of gud and chana in front.
Prepare an aarti plate (thali) with a ghee lamp. Some families also add camphor, a few flowers, roli and a little akshat.
Stand facing the goddess. If there is a bell, one person rings it gently while the aarti is sung.
Hold the plate in your right hand and move the lamp slowly in clockwise circles before the goddess while everyone sings. A common practice is to wave the lamp four times before her feet, twice at the middle, once at the face and then seven times around the whole image, but families follow their own custom.
Sing all the stanzas, returning to the refrain "Jai Santoshi Mata" after each one.
At the end, say "Bolo Santoshi Mata ki jai". Offer the flame to everyone present: each person passes their palms over the lamp and touches them to the eyes and forehead.
Then distribute the gud-chana prasad. Remember that nothing sour is offered or eaten on a vrat Friday.

The aarti can be sung by one person alone or by the whole family. What matters in the tradition is a clean place, a steady lamp and a calm, devoted mind; a perfect voice is not needed.

"Main To Aarti Utaru": the film aarti

Many people also know a second, very popular aarti song: "Main To Aarti Utaru Re Santoshi Mata Ki" from the 1975 Hindi film Jai Santoshi Maa. It was sung by Usha Mangeshkar with lyrics by Kavi Pradeep, and it is often played at Santoshi Mata temples and in homes. It is a separate film song, not the traditional aarti given above. Devotees may sing either, and many sing the traditional aarti in the puja and enjoy the film song as a bhajan.

सन्तोषी माता की आरती

अन्तिम पद कहता है कि जो कोई संतोषी माता की यह आरती गाता है, वह ऋद्धि सिद्धि, सुख और सम्पत्ति जी भरकर पाता है। अधिकतर आरतियों की अन्तिम पंक्तियों की तरह यह आरती का पारम्परिक आशीर्वचन है, जिसे श्रद्धा के रूप में देखा जाता है।

संतोषी माता की आरती कैसे करें

आरती शुक्रवार की पूजा का अन्तिम चरण है, जिसका पूरा क्रम व्रत विधि पृष्ठ पर दिया गया है। घर पर आरती करने का सरल तरीका:

पहले कथा पूरी करें। चौकी पर माँ का चित्र या मूर्ति, सामने कलश और गुड़ चने की कटोरी रहने दें।
आरती की थाली में घी का दीपक रखें। कुछ परिवार कपूर, थोड़े फूल, रोली और अक्षत भी रखते हैं।
माँ की ओर मुख करके खड़े हों। घंटी हो तो एक व्यक्ति आरती के समय धीरे धीरे घंटी बजाए।
थाली दाहिने हाथ में लेकर दीपक को माँ के सामने घड़ी की दिशा में धीरे धीरे घुमाएँ और सब मिलकर आरती गाएँ। प्रचलित रीति है कि चार बार चरणों के सामने, दो बार नाभि के सामने, एक बार मुख के सामने और फिर सात बार पूरी प्रतिमा के चारों ओर आरती घुमाई जाए, पर हर परिवार अपनी परम्परा मानता है।
